| What do you think of the woman's sacrifice for their love?|
Do you like the story of 'The Little Mermaid '?
There are so poor Mermaid who abandon her father, family and her whole things.. for her love... in that story.
What do you think of her?
I really want to know your thought about 'The Little Mermaid'
For my school project, I'm undertaking on finding culture included in 'The little Mermaid'.
* IF ANYONE CAN RESPOND, I'D REALLY APPRECIATE IT....^^*

Coincidentally I just bought the CD _The Angel in the House_ done by the STORY, which was Jonatha Brooke and Jennifer Kimball. One of the songs on that CD is Mermaid, about Andersen's mermaid and what one gives up for love. Although, in the story, she is actually sacrificing for a soul, if I remember correctly. Love is a means to an end. I'll have to reread it. Laura Mc

I was going to agree, but after rereading the original, I see that she fell in love with the prince first. However, granny's tale of a soul is also a BIG enticement, and I think you can argue that the two goals have merged by the story's end. Hmmm .... thought for a retelling: a mermaid who _IS_ only after a soul. Look into her thoughts -- does she still choose to spare his life? If so, why? If not, is it so she can return to the sea and get another chance, come up with another line to feed the witch? I think that would make a good basis -- either her second attempt, or coping with the aftermath of having chosen to return to her family. Or a more mercenary princess, angry at having been scorned, who decides the prince is dull anyway, and that she prefers his statue in her garden at home. Probably been done. :-)
I'm afraid I don't quite understand just what you're asking for in your project. Do you want our personal feelings about the tale? Or our thoughts about its place in culture -- either now or in Andersen's time? Can you give us more detail?
