| Donkeyskinskin, Deerskin, and other varients ...|
My term is *finally* underway, and I'm feeling quite exhilarated; I'm working on two topics at different stages of completion, and I thought that I'd throw them out to see what you guys thought. The first one - or, the one closer to completion, anyway - concerns the story of All-Furs/TatterCoats/Donkeyskin and the modern variations on the theme (i.e., McKinleys _Deerskin_) which explore the theme of abuse and its consequences in more detail, bringing concrete reality to the genre of the fairy tale. I like the fact that this gives me a chance to repudiate Bettleheim; that was the interpretation of his that I most disagreed with. Plus, the authors who I'm working with so far are so fascinating to examine! I'm working with _Deerskin_, with Jane and Terri's tales from _The Armless Maiden_, and with Midori's _Tattercoats_ from _Black Thorn, White Rose_; I was just wondering if anyone else had any favored variations upon this tale to share. Thanks all!

Have you read Lynn Reid Banks' _Melusine: A Mystery_? It takes the medieval legend of the snake-woman and adds the incest motif.

No, I don't think that I've come across that work; it sounds fascinating. I will definitely look it up. Thank you.
