Text advice?
I'm planning to organize my contemporary world literature class in the fall around fairy and folk tales. I'm thinking Calvino's If on a Winter's Night a Traveler and Coover's Briar Rose, since I need to include the postmodern novel as well. Any suggestions on non-Western texts I might include? Many thanks for your help! You are all incredible!

Re: Text advice?
I don't know about other texts, but might I suggest Calvino's The Baron in the Trees instead of the one you mention? I find On a winter's night etc. too clever to be likeable, while The Baron has a more fairy-tale-like magic.

Re: Text advice?
Thanks so much! I will definitely take a look at the other Calvino; I'm actually using Rushdie's Haroun in a different class right now and will have many of the same students, so I'm looking for other possibilities. I really appreciate your help!

an Australian tale?
It's a bit lateral, but what about Murray Bail's Eucalyptus. It's an Australian fairy tale, really delightful. I know it's still Western, technically, but Australian literature tends to be underrepresented, and has post-colonial resonance also.
