Folktales from the Middle East, etc.
Hi, my name's Elizabeth and I used to come here all the time when I was in HS. I don't know how I got out of the habit.
Anyway, I'm in the process of doing some creative writing to send in as part of my application for grad school. I decided I wanted to write a short story about a mermaid, but I didn't want it to be such a replica of all the Irish folktales that I'm already familiar with. I decided that having the setting be on the coast of Oman would be really fun. So, I've been trying to do research on local folktales from the area. I'm having a hard time, though, finding much information. I would really like to have some basis in actual water legends; if not from Oman, than from the region. Really I'd be happy with any kind of folktale or links to where I might find a lot of folktales from the middle east. I've searched Wikipedia and I already know about Atargatis. I can't seem to find detailed stories about her though. Everything I've seen is very vague and just gives highlights. I'd like the actual folktales if anyone knows of any.
Thanks so much!
Amy Elizabeth
