Plays
We are looking to turn some <interesting> faerie tales into short scripts to be performed in the spring for elementary students...
Anyone have any ideas?
PS. We're looking for more obscure ideas not just little red riding
hood, three little pigs, gingerbread man, etc...:rollin

Re: Plays
Humm, humm, humm -- I presume the FX budget is low? And the possibilities for scenery?
Let's see --
Kate Crackernuts -- you'd probably have to put her sister behind something to put the sheep head on and off, but it could be done. (And you might need to rewrite to take out the horse.)
Tattercoats has one transformation, at the end. Perhaps the geese could be skipped.

Re: Plays
Come to think of it, Catskin and Cap O' Rushes have got no magic at all.
On the other hand -- how many actors per play? Most of the ones I've recommended don't have many roles. Is this a desirable quantity?

Re: Plays
We have about 5 actors/actresses and, yes, very low budget- if any. We are self-supplying in our funds. Thanks for the suggestions so far... I'll read them over and let the others read them as well. But keep 'em coming if you please!

Re: Plays
Snow White and Rose Red has just six characters: the widow, the girls, the bear, the dwarf, and the bear's brother -- but the brother and dwarf are never on at once.
Goose Girl's another one with a limited set -- let's see, the queen, the princess, the servant, the king, his son, the boy who's a gooseherd -- and the horse, which may be a complication. There's another version of this, where the boy is the servant's victim, The Lord of Lorn and the False Steward, where that element was suppressed.
The White and the Black Bride, Brother and Sister, and The White Duck all have a limited number of characters, but also all have a transformation.

Re: Plays
Kate Crack-ur-nuts. My kids would die laughing at that as that's how it would likely be read by elementary school children.

Re: Plays
Bearskin was always one of my favorites. THis Beauty and Beast type story is in all the Grimms collections and doesn't actually have special effects. Just a very sweet story.

Re: Plays
Bearskin
The question is, how young are the spectators? It does end with the two older sisters killing themselves.
