Peter and the Wolf
Does anyone know if this tale existed in any form (oral or written) before Sergei Prokofiev's composition came about? Or did Prokofiev invent it himself, with the story eventually becoming perceived commonly as a fairy tale somewhere down the line?

Re: Peter and the Wolf
My understanding has always been that it was an original text by Prokofiev. A cursory look at the internet, such as this page, seems to back me up.

Re: Peter and the Wolf
In addition to Heidi's finds I keep coming across references to 'Prokofiev's adaptation of the traditional Russian folktale..' though I haven't found this tale yet. I'll keep looking.
You might also find this NY
Times article interesting.

Re: Peter and the Wolf
In my searches I've come across lots of references to 'a retelling of a Russian folktale' BUT the more scholarly (ie. researched) references containing a bibliography say Prokofiev is the author and it's 'not a true folktale' (see this teacher's site for example).
I haven't been successful in finding a similar tale (Russian or) not either - though there are many talking animals and Peter is a common name.
I can't access my Russian fairy tale and folktale books right now to double check but Peter and the Wolf seems to be a fairly new story after all (I love Wikipedia but the nature of it being able to be contributed to by anyone always has me searching for other sources to back up what it says - interestingly, I haven't come across anything at odds with scholarly research yet though!)

New version of Peter and the Wolf
Just discovered a new version of Peter and the Wolf with Bono and Gavin Friday. Sounds interesting. The link has a mini-article on the history of the story that I haven't read anywhere else. Think it's worth a look.

Re: New version of Peter and the Wolf
Fascinating that Prokifiev might have been the first to write this tale down. More fascinating is the possibility that he actually invented it.
thanks for the thread.
