Help with a mask
Hi people,
nice to be here. Hey, listen I don't know if this is in your alley but I would like some help with this mask:

I would like to find out what kind of people wore this and in what occasion. Looks European - Central ot West - and maybe is for some (dark) ritual? Any help? Any ideas where to find out or ask? Thanks a lot!

Re: Help with a mask
It's a little hard to tell from that picture, but I'll take a shot. With the long nose my first thought was "tengu," but I'm pretty sure it's Venetian.

Re: Help with a mask
Good stuff, Richard! Thank you for your opinion. This "tengu" idea looks interesting and helps a lot. About the Venetian - well I am not sure because of the huge variety and vast meanings/purposes... Anyway, I wrote an e-mail to a certain web site that deals with the Venetian masks and history so will wait for their response... Curious to see what they have to say.

Re: Help with a mask
My first thought was Venitian as well.. but that mask looks a little different, and creepy

Re: Help with a mask
Could it be from the commedia dell'arte? If so, it would turn up in Venice for Carneval.

Re: Help with a mask
It definitely looks commedia dell'arte.
The lighting in which it was shot does a great deal to make the effect creepier
