Legend or truth??
Hello! I wanted to ask a question although I don't know if it match
the forum very much! :) Well, I wanted to ask if King Arthur's legend
is really a legend or truth??? I knew it was a legend but today
I read in a site that almost in the 12-13 century they found a tomb
in Glastonbury which said ''Here lies King Arthur in the island
of Avalon'' or something like that in Latin. I know Avalon didn't
really exist. After that, I found a photo in a site for Glastonbury
which confused me even more... you can see it here:

Please someone answer me!! I'm really confused and I really want to learn!!

Re: Legend Or Truth
There are a few documentaries about King Arthur you might want to look for. They appear on Discover and other channels from time to time.
Essentially, the site found is what is the most likely location of the ruler upon whom the stories of King Arthur are founded. It's unknown as to whether he was ever referred to as Arthur or not. He was believed to be a Romanized Celt and a very effective warlord.
Many stories are based upon real events but embelished with fiction. Lancelot was a later addition and is believed to be completely fictional.
The body discovered is believed to have been lost.

Re: Legend Or Truth
i saw recently on one of the channels that the supposed grave of arthur at the supposed avalon, was actually created by 'monks' around the time it was "discovered" in order to propogate and increase visitation and revenue at their church. philologists studied the writing and discovered it contained letters that were "written" in such a way that their shapes occurred at only period in time...which was the same time that church was nearly destroyed and rebuilt. (circa 1100ad - 1200ad).
cheers

Re: Legend Or Truth
I know Avalon didn't exist...I just thought that maybe Glastonbury was built where there was the place people called Avalon or something like that... So i guess it's complicated between history and fiction right? Thanx anyway!
