Underdog prevailing in fairytales
I was wondering if anyone had any input or information on the theme of underdogs being triumphant in fairytales. Any input it very much appreciated. Thanks so much!

unpromising hero
A good search term would be 'unpromising hero'. It's a common motif in Northern European tales. Often a youngest son, in some old translations he's named 'Boots'.
In some tales he has, or appears to have, mangy scalp or hair.

underdogs
the third son is often the 'winner' in fairytales...I don't know if that's cos he's the underdog (being young and naive) or just cos the number 3 is magical...
Golden Goose, Cinderella, Jack and the Beanstalk, the Ugly Duckling. It seems to have a lot to do with simplicity, the seemingly silly one seems to triumph over more scheming characters.

Re: Underdog prevailing in fairytales
Speaking of the youngest son, I was just at the library today and happened to pick up a Grimm's brothers book, and read this fairy tale that I had never heard of. It was about a golden bird, and golden horse, and a princess from a golden castle.. and a fox helping the kind, youngest brother to obtain these treasures? Does anyone know what it's called? I think it's the Golden Bird or something with Golden in the title.
