moons in fairy tales
Can anyone think of fairy tales with moons besides "The Dress of Sun, Moon, and Stars," and "East o' the Sun and West o' the Moon." Thanks!

Re: moons in fairy tales
Darien,
Try searching for "moon" on SurLaLune and sorting through the results--several pages of results come up. Some of the results include:
The Moon
The Sun and the Moon
How Sun, Moon, and Wind Went Out to Dinner
The Sun and the Moon
The Moon and His Frog-Wife
And there's more but I don't have time to list them all here!

Re: moons in fairy tales
The Buried Moon has the moon in a particularly important role.
The Moon can also be one of the characters a searching princess finds on her journey: The Enchanted Pig, or Master Semolina.
And then there's Sun, Moon, and Talia, except that "Moon" there is the name of the Sleeping Beauty's daughter.

Oh, yes -- Hansel and Gretel try to find their way back by moonlight.

Re: moons in fairy tales
I'm slowly reading through the anthology Snow White, Blood Red right now, compiled by Ellen Datlow and Terri Windling (I think this will turn out to be a good anthology series). There's a nice story dealing with the moon titled The Moon is Drowning While I Sleep by Charles de Lint.

Re: moons in fairy tales
"The Moon is Drowning While I Sleep" is a retelling of "The Buried Moon."

Moons in Fairytales
One story that has an illustration of a moon that I adore is titled" The Moon" by Robery Louis Stevenson in "Selections From A Child's Garden Of Verses By Robert Louis Stevenson illustrated by Jessie Wilcox Smith, Dandelion Library, The Groiler Society 1967
I love this illustration of the moon.

Re: Stevenson Illustrations
I haven't seen that collection, but I really like the designs Michael Hague uses for the moon in his collection of Stevenson's Garden of Verses.

Re: Stevenson Illustrations
There's also a version of Snow White in Italo Calvino's "Italian Fairy Tales," in which the moon rescues the protagonist from her evil sisters (instead of a stepmother).

Re: moons in fairy tales
Oh, yes, in "Nourie Hadig", an Armenian Snow White, the mother (not stepmother) asks the moon who is the most beautiful.
