Re: supernatural within fairytales
Hmm, that's kind of a broad question. Can you narrow it down a little bit, or give us its context?

I'm guessing that a teacher somewhere asked you to write about why fairy tales have fantastic things going on in them? Why do those stories use those kinds of ideas?

this question has so many answer depending on how you approach it. One place you might start is look at a book by Vladimir Propp. It's a rather old book, but its called "The Morphology of Folktales". Propp looks at how fairy tales are structured as stories and how the fantastic images "function" or are used to help create meaning in a story. While not too many of us like Bruno Bettelheim, "Uses of Enchantment" you might find it an interesting way to look at someone's ideas about how the fantastic images in a story are used to suggest our different pyschological issues. A last book which is really fun to read is Marina Warner "From the Beast to the Blonde". This is much more of a historical point of view and her research discusses how certain fantastic images developed over time to reflect different historical attitudes about women and other subjects. Any one of these approaches, Propp's structural studies of the fantastic, Bettelheim's psychological study or Warner's social history of the fantastic should give you an armload of ideas.

though Terri is right...if you gives us a bit more information about you project we might be able to point you toward a more precise answer.
