the Christmas Spider
In putting up our Christmas tree this year (the first time in three years) I found the Christmas Spider. Other then the fact, I know he wove the tinsle, I can't remember how the legend goes. Does anyone remember? I wanted to tell my friends children, but I keep drawing a blank.

I retold that story in HARK: A Christmas Sampler.It is a Ukrainian story.A mother spider and babies in the house go up and down the family Christmas tree exploring, leaving trails of gray web everywhere. When the Christ child visited the family that evening, He saw the gray webs and turned them into silver. And that was the first tinsel.

A local place here in Evanston identifies the origin as German.
