Hear no Evil, See no Evil, Speak no Evil...
I have recently been asked the history behind the "Hear no Evil, See no Evil, Speak no Evil" monkey figurines that appear everywhere. So far, I haven't found any information on them.

Does anyone have any clues?

Japanese Legend?
See the following web-site from the Santa Cruz library:

Has references. Hope it helps.

Hear No Evil
Wolfgang Mieder has written a comprehensive study of "The Proverbial Three Wise Monkeys" in his book TRADITION AND INNOVATION IN FOLK LITERATURE (University Press of New England, 1987).

Re: Hear No Evil
Thanks for the help! I do enjoy learning the answers to some of the wide array of questions that end up in my box.

I just wish there was time to answer all of them, especially the interesting ones.
