Well, I haven't seen it, but I know a hero traditionally goes into an "underworld" of some sort--a la Odysseus or Aeneis--and brings back a boon. . .

Re: Tracing the hero journey of Shrek
Is the hero journey the one referred to by Joseph Campbell? I am far from familiar with the hero journey anymore. Also, Shrek is a modern take on fairy tale themes by William Steig originally. I don't think much has been written or considered by anyone about his hero journey, so a literature search on Shrek would be fairly useless.

Read the reviews for Steig's book on Amazon.com for kicks. Many people bemoaned how the book is nothing like the movie, not knowing the picture book came way, way before the movie. Steig is better known for his "CDB!" and "Sylvester and the Magic Pebble."
