Donkeyskin images on the Web ...
Hello All:
I'm preparing for my Masters' presentation, and I was wondering whether you guys might know of any Donkeyskin images on the Internet. *I* think that the material is fascinating, but as some members of my audience might not agree after twenty minutes of my droning on about it, I'd like to try to break up any possible monotony with visuals. Heidi has one wonderful "Catskin" by Kay Neilson up, but would any of you happen to know of others? Thanks in advance.

Best,
Helen

Donkeyskin
I don't know if these are on the internet but in Marina Warner's FROM THE BEAST TO THE BLONDE you can find the following. I am fairly sure you can scan them in and show them for your presentation without violating copyright as they are for one-time viewing only and not part of a publication or exhibit.

p. 319, Catherine Deneuve in The Magic Donkey (film still, 1971).

p. 323, "Peau d/Ane" (Donkeyskin), La Cabinet des fees, Paris (painting).

p.s. Helen, I am still waiting to hear from my editor about our project. She was enthused when I first brought it up, so let's hope it goes ahead. We could, in a couple of weeks, talk about putting together a casual proposal for her . . .

And,
Of course there are also Terri's great paintings, which you can find on the Endicott Studio site . . .

Great minds ...
... think alike. Those are the only other images that I've been able to find ... I suppose that it's one of those tales that isn't illustrated too frequently for reasons of appropriateness. I'd even thought of showing a clip from Peau d'Ane, but our office adminstrator says that it's impossible to find, so I might have to stick with the stills. I'm going to contact Terri to see if it would be all right to use her images ... I also remember Nancy Canepa mentioning a rather tantalizing version in which there is a stand-in bridegroom who is illustrated to be identical to the King, which sounds quite relevant (I'll be asking her about that specifically).
The three particular versions that I'm looking for are of the Donkeyskin (which we seem to have covered) the Wooden-Cloak (a mostly British variant) and the Golden Lantern (Russian, with some French cousins). It anyone knows of illustrated versions of the lattter two, I'd love to hear about them ...[wistfully]...
I'm *thrilled* to hear that your editor seems in favor of the project ... it's enough to cancel out my mid-winter blahs altogether! Thanks, and have a terrific night.

Hi, I just came across this board and I know it might be too late but I found some illustrations on this site:

Re: donkeyskin illustrations
Dear Andrea:
You rock! Thank you so much for posting the link - I actually had stumbled across it during my frantic Web-hunt, but it's really nice of you to take the time to write. I did the presentation last month (and included those images, actually) and will be doing it again at WisCon next month. I also included Terri's "Donkeyskin," with the kind permission of the artist, an image of "The She-Bear" by Cruikshanks, and a few Art Nouveau renderings. I had to get a bit creative at times, I'm afraid; my image during the section on "Tebaldo," where the daughter escapes by being entombed in a wooden chest, is of an appropriate chest of the period (museum piece) similar to the one within which the heroine was enclosed. Ditto "The Golden Lantern." I think that it's a good presentation, overall; and I'm quite looking forward to feedback should any of you be around at WisCon. Again, thank you!

Best,
Helen

Re: donkeyskin illustrations
Helen, I'm looking forward to seeing your presentation at Wiscon. By the way, I've volunteered you for the annual fairy tale panel, which is on "Transgressive Characters in Fairy Tales" (Midori's idea, actually). The other panelists are Midori, me, Heinz Insu Fenkl, Greg, and Kate. (See Kate, you *have* to come now!) Charles, if you're still going (and I hope, hope, hope you are), let me know asap and we'll squeeze you on too.

Dear Terri:
Thank you! I'm very much looking forward to it. Being on the panel will be an honor, a pleasure, and a challenge.

Donkeyskins/Allerleirauh
You're welcome Helen!! I was looking for illustrations, because I read the Grimm's version of Allerleirauh and wanted to make a doll based on it. I had no idea how many versions there were until I came upon this website. I'm looking foward to reading all of the modern versions.

Good luck with your presentations!!

Andrea
