"gaze not more into the bitter glass"
This might have been covered before but how often is glass used in fairy tales and folk lores to portray a cynical outlook on life? I was just reading Yeats's "The Two Trees" and was instantly reminded of the Snow Queen with the lines "Gaze no more in the bitter glass/ The demons, with the subtle guile,/ Lift up before us when they pass,/ Or only gaze a little while." I know that Yeats used a lot of Irish folklore in his poems so I'm not sure if that's a real allusion to the Snow Queen or not, are there other references to glass used this way in other tales?

(i love how I'm supposed to be doing an assignment on the passions and my brain is trying to work fairy tales into the theme somehow. is this somehow my sleep deprivation manifesting itself?)

Re: "gaze not more into the bitter glass"
Dear Jill:
If you poke around in the archives a bit, you should find a fairly long thread on the topic of glass in fairy tales (sorry, can't remember the exact title). You *could* make the point that glass is frequently used as a medium for either difficulty (the glass mountain) or bitter truth (the wicked queen's mirror). I may be grasping at straws here - my eyes are starting to cross after reading too many midterms - but the older thread ought to have some helpful material.

Best,
Helen

Jill,
If you don't find the topic on the board, I have a transcription of most of it, as I referenced it for a novel that was in progress at the time. If you want to contact me via my email, I'll send you a copy of it.

Glass... Pages 1-3
It was when I was working on an intro to my poetry book Twisting the Glass. Here's the archive page it's on:

Discussion on Glass (Dec 2000)

There are 3 pages worth of discussion, all quite interesting!

Greg's novel...
I just noticed your post (I'm guessing we were writing about the same time) re: your novel and the Glass... thread. Was it for Fitcher's Brides?

Soft whispers and valley blossoms,
