Story
Since I publish things few and far between, I thought I'd post a recent visual and musical interpretation of a tale I wrote that is accessible online, at www.bornmagazine.org--a short work called "Petting Zoo Tale" which is based loosely on a Yiddish fairy tale about a young marriage, and some chickens. The site might load slowly if you have an old computer (like my own). But I really like the music, with its sounds of chickens and such!

Born Magazine is looking for very short works, by the way, if anyone is interested. You can find submission guidelines on the site. They are getting quite a bit of attention for their projects. I think fairy tale based work lends itself well to the form, not only because of the length but because of the images, etc.

NOT REQUIRED READING OF COURSE! But I thought I'd post this info--as I relish reading books by so many of you, and other works as they become available, like Kerrie's poetry.

All best,
Kate

Thanks!
Thanks, Jess. It's one of a series I've been working on for a couple of years . . . nearly done with an entire collection, which I do hope to publish someday. I'll be eager to hear your thoughts! I hope you have luck downloading the images and sounds--I think new computers do it with great ease.

Petting Zoo
Kate,

I loved your story - no trouble at all downloading. Funny thing reading it though, it reminded me of three stages of my own life. lol

Started Ketzia Gold this morning!

Thank You
Jess,

Thank you for such kind words. I am curious which 'three stages' the story reminded you of--though that's a personal question which can remain unanswered, of course. (Unless you used to have a tiny pony, which you must tell me!) A less personal, but more idiotic, question is: what is "lol"? It keeps coming up on this board. I imagine it's new electronic-speak, and I'm sorely behind the times . . . !

Thank you also for picking up The Complete Tales of Ketzia Gold. How lovely of you, really.

All very best,
Kate

Petting Zoo
Kate,

lol - is "laugh out loud", although I prefer my friends rothfllinnnng, which is "rolling on the floor laughing".

The three stages, well, it is kind of unique to me. My father is a physiologist and my mother is an entomologist. We always had a strange menagerie (sp?) at home. So, I grew up with the petting zoo only it wasn't in the basement. Our house did look unusual on the outside (it was round - it was designed by Bruce Goff for a music professor to have chamber concerts), but we seemed sort of ordinary to the unintiated. I recall having friends getting ice for their cokes and being surprised by the collection of insects in the freezer, including the hibernating Hercules beetle. It was in many ways enchanting, however. We had all kinds of odd and ordinary animals, lovingly cared for.

Stage 2, I suppose I was "the husband" in your story - an attorney with the odd language and the perfect "balanced" life, but rather oblivious to everything outside of my career.

Stage 3, back to the girl, but this time my petting zoo is my children for whom I take great care, sacrificing my own interests (i.e. the laundree-mat scenario) for what is best for them, plus now I have the "husband" who is loving but somewhat oblivious.

Yes, it is personal, but I don't mind sharing.

bornmagazine
Kate,

What a wonderful little site and I love your piece--with the cackling chickens. You have such a wry sense of humor. I sent about three hours pouring over the site and found it fascinating...what an opportunity to such a mixture of art and media together. The internet at its best. Thanks for the heads up.

Things
Jess,

Thank you so much for sharing those connections to the story. Hmmm, I wonder if you have read Lydia Millet's novel OMNIVORES (Algonquin Books). Este, the book's main character, has an entomologist father. You might especially appreciate some of the details! The novel has a wild, fantastical element as well, which I won't give away here . . . Lydia Millet is an incredible writer whose recent novel, MY HAPPY LIFE, I mentioned somewhere else on this board I think. (I teach it in my imaginary places class.)

And Karen and Midori, thank you too! I love the Born Magazine site. I think they've done some really neat things. I am enamored of those chicken sounds, myself. An Italian composer did the music--Ernesto Napoli. He was very concerned he would misinterpret the tale, but I think he got it just right. The designer, Jeremy Otis, also was incredibly thoughtful and precise. I would definitely encourage anyone with short work to submit to Born. It was a very interesting collaborative process.

Re: Story
I loved your story Kate! It all went together so well, blended seamlessly! (And thanks for mentioning my poetry- I'm beet red!)

(Carrie and Jess- I haven't forgotten about you! I still need to scan in my comments for your stories to send!)

Soft whispers and valley blossoms,

Kerrie
