narrow the field
it would help if you narrowed the cultural field since colors have different implications in different colors (and even within some cultures different time periods) Were you thinking specifically of European tales?

gold
Max Luthi says gold signifies something that has been sought for. His books are very good on fairytales in general.

There is a northern tale about a village girl whose little brother was carried away (by wild geese, iirc). She searched and finally found him in a hut in the woods. He was safe "and playing with a golden ball."

I don't remember any golden ball mentioned elsewhere in the tale, nor any reason for the villagers or the geese to have one.
