Markets for fables, fairy Tales? Terri, anyone?
I'm having difficulty finding a market for new, original fairy tales & fables... what am I doing wrong here?

And, apologies in advance of this subject has been beaten to death recently.

Well, you haven't given us much to go on.

Are these for adults, children, both?

Are they short stories, picture books, poems, novellas, novelettes, plays?

Where have you tried--magazines, websites, book publishers, anthologies?

Re: Markets for fables, fairy Tales? Terri, anyone?
Let's see.
So far, they're short stories, for adults. Maybe more allegory or fable than fairy tale.

I've tried looking via the web, and Writer's Market, but can't quite find someplace that's looking for fairy tales/fables/allegories not based on an older tale...
Same with anthologies; my stuff doesn't seem to fit the criteria. One of the people who have read the stories said of one that it "had the feel of 'The Giving Tree'(?)" which she'd always enjoyed.

A friend has suggested a chapbook, but I'm not ready for that yet.

"...picture books, poems, novellas, novelettes, plays?"

Not yet.

Well, Realms of Fantasy, F&SF and Asimov's would be my top choices in this country for magazines.

You night check locus magazine to see if anyone is doing anthologies for which one of your tales might suit.

Of course, you might also try any number of literary journals (or commercial magazines that accept unsolicited manuscripts)--assuming the writing is high quality. Many journals accept writing in a range of styles; it is quality that matters most.

(I finally got my real name to work, so I'll be using it rather than GoldenNokomis)

I hadn't thought of trying literary mags; thanks. And, you know, if I'm not putting out quality work, I'd rather it not see the light of day, anyhow.
Locus...
I'm gonna have to give it up and subscribe, since I co-run an SF con, and need the industry news, and am writing not just fables but fantasy and some horror as well. Maybe that's why I'm so tired of looking for places to submit, I have to look all over the board...

Sorry it's taken me so long to answer. I've been wrapped up with work on the Year's Best Fantasy anthology, and it's been taking up every nanosecond of my time.

I'm afraid to say, however, that I actually don't know many markets for adult fables and fairy tales beyond the ones mentioned here already. Kate's suggestion to try the various literary journals is a good one -- many of them print all kinds of unusual work these days. If you've got a good university library near you, they probably carry a range of them. You might also try some of the on-line sf/fantasy journals, such as Dark Planet. Good luck!

Thanks to all of you...
I'm glad to know that it's not just me, and I somehow missed this huge market.

Now to go over the two not-fable stories I just finished, before sending them off...
or maybe they are, one, a take on the Troll & Bridge, the other the so-called Wicked Witch, post Oz.

Anywho.

Another try
Don't forget Marvels and Tales.

new markets... new to me, anyway
Thanks, I'd not heard of that one, all this being amazingly new to me...
the writing thing, that is.

Oops, I've been reading and sorting *way* too much material lately. I meant to say Strange Horizons in that last post (www.strangehorizons.com), not Dark Planet. They've posted fairy tale type fiction in the past.

Dern it, my name is gone again!
Jane: "Marvels & Tales" seems to be another place for discussing traditional folklore and fairy tales, and not publishing new ones, or am I missing something there?

Terri: I never thought to try "Strange Horizons" for these stories; I've sent a very weird horror short short to them before, though.

Marvels and Tales
Each issue has a fairy tale redaction. As a member of the board, I actually just read one that had been sibmitted.
