vague fairy tale memories
I have wonderful memories of reading numerous fairy tales when I was very young. My parents had a great set of books that seem to have been lost. I have been trying very hard to locate two stories that I just have a vague recollection of. The first one is about a young girl. The only part of the story that I remember is that she goes into the house of a witch where there are many bird cages, and she needs to find the bird that has a specific key or ring, I can't remember which, to break a spell. I don't remember any more than that, though it was one of my favorite stories.
In the other story, the only scene that I remember is that there was a troll or an ogre girl that was trying to steal a human girl's love. But the man told her to wash the stains out of a shirt, and when she washed it, the stains only got worse. These recollections are very vague I know, but I'm hoping that someone can help me. I would love to read these stories again!

didn't look hard enough I guess!
I had not yet looked at the fairy tale page! East of the Sun West of the Moon is the second story I was looking for! I love this site!

Re: vague fairy tale memories
I believe the first tale you mention is "The Old Woman in the Wood" :

Thanks Kerrie! And thanks for the link! It was what I was looking for.
I am trying to build my library and want a large fairy tale anthology collection, that have a wide range of less well known stories. Do have any suggestions? Barnes and Noble does not have a very wide selection. I would like to hear of other people's favorites before I buy them from Amazon, since I can not look through them first.

thanks again,
Alina

Re: vague fairy tale memories
Alina,
I'm sure you're going to get lots of recommendations on and off the board on this. I'll throw out one: You might want to hunt up "Beauties, Beasts and Enchantments" edited by Jack Zipes. It's a collection of the classic French fairy tales, where, it could be argued, our western tradition begins. He includes both well-known and less familiar stories, but most in their early and unrevised incarnations. I believe it's out of print, but easy to find used.
