Fairy Tales at the Mall!
I'm curious if others have recently seen fairy tale fashion--and other marketed products--out there. (I posted something a while ago about the NY Times Style article on the subject -- it focused on high fashion). I don't mean indirectly "fairy tale inspired"--gosh, there's lots of that too!--but rather clothes and other products that explicitly refer to fairy tale characters or plots.

Today I was at the mall (don't even ask why! I can't spend more than five minutes in a mall without feelings like I can't breathe, truly . . .) and I saw, in the window of a teenage clothing store called Hot Topic, a series of t-shirts with fairy tale characters on them, slogans such as "SNOW WHITE . . . SHE'S ALL BAD." I am going to buy them tomorrow--they were cheap enough--and will post all the slogans. I have to admit I wasa wee bit jealous because I'd thought of a similar project to the t-shirts several years ago but of course, didn't know how to go about getting it off the ground. Too busy with my nose in the books. (On the side, I'm again working on a little clothing project myself--or a concept, I should say, since I am not in any way shape or form a designer . . . don't know what will come of it if anything.)

Also, and I imagine this is aimed at a similar market, I saw that Marvel Comics is launching a new series called "Fairy Tale". (That is new, correct?) The characters are named from fairy tales; I believe Snow White is the mayor, for example.

In any case, I'm very curious to know if anyone on this board is involved in any of these projects--I wonder about the Marvel Comics in particlar--or if anyone has seen others like them. I was surprised to see how explicitly the fairy tale characters were used, myself, for the 'teen' market . . . it made me quite happy, actually!

Re: Fairy Tales at the Mall!
If you go to www.hottopic.com and do a "Search Store" for disney, a lot of stuff comes up. Not exactly the stuff you described, Kate, but this is typical of Hot Topic fare. (I got my "The Last Unicorn" shirt from them, par example.)

shirts
Now those I hadn't seen. The only Hot Topic shirt I've been badly tempted by lately is the "Snow White Heart Tee," red with the wicked queen holding the box for Snow White's heart. Shivery. Wish I'd seen the one you talked about, Kate. I might have had to have it. :-)

Fairy tale shirts
I wanted the Wicked Queen one and the Sleeping Beauty one both, but Alas! their idea of a size large seems to be about 8. Arrrggh.

Re: Fairy tale shirts
Last February my wife found one of the shirts she couldn't pass up. It features, among others, the Evil Queen from Snow White and Maleficent from Sleeping Beauty.

Weird sightings
Kate,

You may enjoy this:

A few weeks ago I was at the Sydney Easter Show (For the unintiated, this is a big annual fair, in a "the bush comes to the city" sort of vein) and there was a *very* curious display in the Government pavillion for ANSTO (The Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation). ANSTO, as you can probably gather, has something of a PR problem. Their display was a giant storybook you could walk into. Scattered about the ground were brightly coloured pamphlets in which various fairy tales and myths had been used to explain some of the research projects on which their scientists were engaged. My personal favourite was "Snow White and the irradiated fruit flies". There was also a Sleeping Beauty one about carbon dating. Pegasus and King Solomon's mines got a look-in too, although I can't remember what they were elucidating....

Wow
Karen,

I've got to get some more information on this. Unreal. I am definitely interested! A friend of mine who also loves fairy tales happens to be writing a book about nuclear 'things' and will be all over this. Too bizarre! I will try to find information from ANSTO on the web . . . Thank you for the tip.

p.s. Thanks for all the posts on fairy tale fashion--and M.Pepper, for the link to Hot Topic.
