Question about "The White Cat" illustration
In another post, someone was trying to find out the title to "The White Cat." In a response, someone posted a link to the story online, and it showed an illustration. I think I've seen that illustration before. It may have even been in the fairy tale book from my childhood that I'm trying to find. The person who posted the link mentioned that the story was in "The Golden Book of Fairy Tales" illustrated by Adrienne Segur. I was wondering if anyone knew if "The Golden Book of Fairy Tales" also included the story "The Green Serpent"? I think I remember that the book I'm trying to find had really nice illustrations like the one of "The White Cat" in the link. I think some of them were in black-and-white also. It was a large hardcover book with a black or dark blue cloth-like cover with the title in gold or silver, and it also had an illustrated dust-jacket. I had the book in the mid-to-late eighties, but I think it may have been older than that, because I think my mom bought it for me used. I know I asked a question about this book in another post, but I've been trying to search the internet for it, and it's hard when all you get is vague descriptions of books, and no picture of it (I'd recognize it if I saw it). Thanks in advance for your help! :-)

adrienne segur's art
This site seems to have most of her illustrations, sorted by book. There is a Green Snake story listed in the fairy tale collection. Hope you recognize her art as the one you are looking for!

Re: Question about "The White Cat" illustration
Thank you for the link! I think I've finally found my book! Yay! :-) I've been wanting to find it for years, but not knowing the title or author, or even the names of some of the stories made it difficult. I definitely had this book as a child, I recognized the cover right away. I looked at Amazon and Barnes and Noble.com and they both had it. It had been out of print for many years (I must have had an old edition), and a lot of other people had been looking for it too! Those illustrations are unforgettable. So anyway, I ordered it, and I can't wait until it comes! In fact, my sister-in-law is due in December and she's going to have a little girl, and I'm going to buy it for my little niece when she's born, too! Thank you to everyone who helped me!

Re: Question about "The White Cat" illustration
I'm a big Adrienne Segur fan myself (I dedicated my anthology The Armless Maiden to her), and so are several other people on this board. If you go through the archives, you'll find several discussions of her. Golden Books, bless them, have also recently republished The Snow Queen illustrated by Segur, in addition to The Golden Book of Fairy Tales.

You might be interested in Ellen Steiber's poem "Silvershod" which was inspired by the story and illustration in The Golden Book of Fairy Tales. It was published in The Armless Maiden, and can be found on-line on The Endicott Studio web site: www.endicott-studio.com/cofshod.html.

The White Cat
Errol le Cain wrote (retold) and illustrated a fabulous version of The White Cat in 1973.
Errol le Cain has done several fairy tale picture books.
For me, he has always been the master of picture book illustration and is undoubtedly my favourite illustrator.
Most of his work is watercolour or gouache, but some of the earlier ones like The White Cat , and Cupid and Psyche are in B/W line drawings.

Segur
Nicole, you might be interested in Wendy Froud's art, if you're not already familiar with it. She's another big Segur fan, and you can see the influence in her work.
