According to Internet sites, Rip is based upon a German folktale "Peter Klaus the Goatherd", which Irving translated at some point prior to writing the book. Obviously, Irving digressed from the original folktale - or rather used the framework to create an American "political" literary folktale. That was a mouthful. I still need to find a version of it though.

of "Peter Klaus the Goatherd" is J.C.C. Nachtigal. Now, does anyone have a copy so that we can see if there is a beldame who pinches herself to see if she is awake?
