John Bauer
Charles brought this wonderful artist to my attention back when he thoughtfully created that visionary art webpage for us. I thought I'd share a few links I've found subsequently:

www.skolinternet.telia.se...mpelst.htm

www.bpib.com/illustrat/bauer.htm

www.johnbauersmuseum.nu/

www.lysator.liu.se/runeberg/jbauer/

elfwood.lysator.liu.se/fa.../menu.html

Has anyone ever seen a copy of Svanhamnen (The Swan Suit)? The one image on Bud Plant is simply too lovely -- quite the perfect swan maiden. The Merman and The Horseman at Dawn are also intriguing. I'm attracted to the non-troll art partially because it's a little underrepresented, I think. Just a bit o' sharin'. :-)

One of my favorites...
Yes indeed, John Bauer is one of my very favorite artists. I discovered his work years and years ago in the English language edition of GREAT SWEDISH FAIRY TALES (Delcourte) which can still be found quite readily in second hand book stores. Since then I've managed to round up 4 or 5 Swedish art books on him (All from Bud Plant Comic Art or Bud Plant Illustrated Books). Not being able to read Swedish I don't know too much about his life just that he worked during the early part of the last century and that he (and his whole family) died tragically young in a boating accident. I love his delicate pen line and his subtle coloring but most of all I love his stylization of the forested world of Swedish folk and fairy tale.

You might also be interested in the work of another Swede, Theodor Kittelsen. Though his work is much cruder than Bauer, it has great power and his painting of a young princess riding on the back of a great white polar bear is stunning. There is also a nice art book on this artist available from Bud Plant.

Best,
Charles
