Kay Nielsen art?
Does anyone know where the original painting for "Hansel and Gretel" painted by Nielsen for the 1925 edition of fairy tale book of same name might be?

I am interested in using it for the cover of my anthology of Grimm fairy tale poems and hope to find some way of getting the best possible reporduction of it. Otherwise I'll have to scan it from a book and that won't be as good since I'll have to compensate for "moire" pattern from printing.

Thanks!

Re: Kay Nielsen art?
Claudia, I am not aware of where most of the Nielsen originals are located. If I remember correctly there are a few books on Nielsen that are out of print. Perhaps getting a copy through interlibrary loan would help with listing the homes of the originals. I haven't ever seen the information online.

Kay Neilson art...
I assume you have the publisher info on the original 'Hansel and Gretel'? (If not, I will be happy to type it all in). That might be a place to start...

Re: Kay Neilson art...
Perhaps David Larkin, who edited the Peacock Press series that did two books on Nielson's art, might know. I don't know where Larkin is these days, but I sometimes see his name on books so he's still involved with the book publishing industry. Perhaps someone here knows him, or an internet search might find him?

Paintings
Occasionally pieces come up for sale. A few years ago one came up in a Scottish sale (so a dealer friend told me) and he got it for peanuts (about 150 pounds) because he was the only one who knew what it was. I told him he would have had a battle on his hands if I had been there!

Who's got the art?
Claudia,

None of the "art" books on Nielsen give the paintings provinence (I just checked).

So, you might try contacting these people:

I'd start with Jo Ann Reisler. She is a dealer and collector of illustration art and can be contacted at 360 Glydon St., NE, Vienna VA 22180. Ph: 703 938 2967/ Fax: 703 938 9507. E-mail: Reisler@Clark.net

                Then:

The Chris Beetles Gallery. They specialize in the sale of "Brittish" illustration art and produce absolutley delectable catalogs that double as full color, 200 to 300 pg. art books. Their address is: 8 & 10 Ryder St.,St. James's, London, UK SW1Y 6QB. Ph: 0171 839 7551. E-mail: beetles@pavilion.co.uk

The Boston Public Library, The John D. Merriam Collection (Owns at least: "Snow Drop" from HANSEL AND GRETLE AND OTHER STORIES)

Kendra Krienke and Alan Daniel, Bears Nest, 140 Asheley Place, Park Ridge NJ 07656 (Buy and sell illustration art and own "The Lad in Battle" from EAST OF THE SUN ...)

The V & A Museum in London has a huge collection of Illustration art (with more than several Neilsens) in their Prints and Drawing collection.

        Good luck,
        Charles
