Whats that book called
a while ago I read a short chapter book for young adult and i can't remember what the title is called. IT is about three brothers, two who are big and mean, youngest is kind and loves to sing. They with their hunting crazed father hunt a beautiful deer that turns into a beautiful women. The three brothers go on tasks to see who wins her hand in marriage. However is not sure that she is a princess, like everyone thinks, because she lost her memory. She does of coarse turn out to be a princess and marries the youngest prince. Does any one know what this book is called?

Sounds like James Thurber's THE WHITE DEER, one of my all-time favorite books.

Leah,
I'll bet the visitor who responded to your request for information about the book The White Deer is none other than Jane Yolen herself! If you're not familiar with her works you might want to run to your nearest library!

You sound very passionate about fairy tales and fantasy ... have you read The Seer and the Sword by Victoria Hanley? If you do, let me know what you think ... I'm her publicist and I know she would be very interested in hearing your opionion, considering your interest in this genre.

Original Fairy Tales
Kay Vandergrift has a collection of fairy tale retellings that is liberal enough to include original fairy tales with fairy tale settings, but you'd have to search through them:

www.scils.rutgers.edu/%7E...iries.html

Off the top of my head, I *believe* Peter Beagle's The Last Unicorn, Patricia McKillip's Winter Rose, and Neil Gaiman's Stardust have fairy tale settings but aren't retellings.

I checked the archives, but I couldn't find anything...Kerrie?

KHilgefort yes I have read the Seer and the Sword
I read the Seer and the Sword in one day and loved it! I can't wait for the sequel. Do you have any ideas of what it is going to me about?

Re: Original Fairy Tales
Actually, Pat McKillip's Winter Rose is loosely based on the ballad of Tam Lin. But I agree with Holly that in gneneral her books have a fairy tale feel while being original in plot. Also Midori Snyder's Soul-string...which is out of print, I believe, but well worth tracking down.

The best modern writer of fairy tales, hands down, is Jane Yolen; but you might also want to try collections of short stories by Nicholas Stuart Gray, Richard Kennedy, Allison Uttley, William Kotzwinkle, and Robin McKinley's The Knot in the Grain.
