African American Song lyrics mentioning the DEVIL?
Hi all,

I am trying to write a paper about the devil in African-American song lyrics and am thus searching for primary and secondary texts which deal with this topic.

I have found Rober Johnson lyrics (blues) and some others. Yet, I am also looking for lyrics from rock, soul, funk etc. which are firstly, written by African-Americans
and secondly, deal with the devil.

In other words I am looking for literature on:
- the devil and music (especially popular music, e.g. rock)
- the devil and African-American music
- the devil and song lyrics

I have checked the following post on this board:
www.surlalunefairytales.c...ssign.html

Any further suggestions? Thanks a million

Devilish Lyrics
One more obvious place to look is in the area of the old Negro Spirituals, such as "Roll the Old Chariot Along." That's one example, but a Google search would turn up a lot more, with lyrics. There are web sites dedicated to this.

Friend of the Devil
Check out any Blues lyrics site - there must be hundreds of Blues and Gospel songs pertaining to Old Nick.

Alan Lomax
If you have access to a good university library you can probably find some of the really brillant collections of African American folksongs collected by ethnomusicologist Alan Lomax. Second best, might be to have a look at his comprehensive website:
