Info on Parke Godwin
Hello everyone,

This is my first post and I found this board by doing a search for one of my favorite authors; Parke Godwin.

Does anyone have any information on him? Is he still writing? And is he working on a new book?

Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Rob Evans

Re: Info on Parke Godwin
I haven't seen any new books from Parke Godwin in years, but I found this excellent article about his body of work on The Green Man Review site.

You might want to ask Richard Parks
I noticed that Parke Godwin did a review of Richard's book "The Ogre's Wife". I wonder if he might know more. Richard is a frequent contributor here and he does have an email and website. Since Richard has obviously been influenced by Parke Godwin, you might enjoy that book, The Ogre's Wife, as I did.

Parke (Pete) Godwin is working on a second anthology for SFBC to which Midori and I have been invited so I know he is still alive and working!

Thanks!

Glad to know he's still working. I loved his take on Robin Hood and King Arthur. They were books I never wanted to end.

Parke Godwin
To add a little more information, yes, Parke Godwin is still writing. After he did the two books on Robin Hood he also wrote fictionalized accounts of Beowulf (TOWER OF BEOWULF) and King Harold of England, LORD OF SUNSET, which you really shouldn't miss. Besides the anthology (which I didn't know about) he's currently working on a YA novel. He's also done a recent novel under a pseudonym, but I'm not allowed to reveal which one.

Sorry to be so late replying; I've been away for a few days.

Re: Parke Godwin
Thanks. I knew about the Lord of Sunset and Beowulf.

You said he's working on a YA novel. What does YA stand for?

I understand you can't reveal the pseudonym. That's the whole point, eh?

However, can you recommend a good book then.

Re: Parke Godwin
YA is the shortened term for young adult novel.

Re: Parke Godwin
Actually, I _can_ recommend some good books, though not the one I think you mean. I assume you're already familiar with the Snake Oil duology (WAITING FOR THE GALACTIC BUS and THE SNAKE OIL WARS). Then there's two more obscure paperbacks he did, A MEMORY OF LIONS (Saxons after the Conquest) and a sf book, LIMBO SEARCH. The latter especially didn't get much attention, but I found it more entertaining than most of the sf I've read lately. There's also DARKER PLACES, a contemporary dark fantasy and the two sf books he did with Marvin Kaye MASTERS OF SOLITUDE and WINTERMIND. He's got more range than he sometimes gets credit for.

And as a footnote: Jess, Parke Godwin is definitely an influence on my own work (not the only one, of course, but a major one). That's something not many people have picked up on.

Re: Parke Godwin
Oh, well, it was worth a try.

I have read all of his books - except for the ones he did with Marvin Kaye. I always look for them when I go into used book stores, but no luck yet.

The first one I read was "Waiting for the Galactic Bus". Then several years later I found "Sherwood", then I started hunting for his books. The only one I wasn't a big fan of was "A Truce with Time".

The next time I'm in the local bookstore I'll be sure to take a look for your work.

If you are looking for hard to find, out of print, you might try:

www.bookfinder.com

It searches the inventory of several online booksellers, used and new.

Re: Parke Godwin
One I did forget to mention was THE FIRE WHEN IT COMES and Other Stories, which is, so far as I know, the only collection he's done, and includes the title story, which was a World Fantasy Award winner. Very hard to find. There's also A COLD BLUE LIGHT, a ghost story he did with Marvin Kaye. There's also THE NIGHT YOU COULD HEAR FOREVER, which is an electronic book in PDF format, still available through BookFinder, as Heidi mentioned.

There's never enough of a good writer. If we're including writers influenced by Godwin, you might want to check out THE LOVERS: The Story of Tristan and Yseult and WATCH BY MOONLIGHT, both by Kate Hawks.

Rob, if you want, email me off list and I'll get you Parke Godwin's mailing address and you can ask him yourself what he's up to.
