Weddings
Good morning all. I am in the process of creating a series of potential articles on wedding traditions. But it doesn't just include the traditions, the story in my eyes need to have practical information as well to fully engage the market. I have done this once with shoes (the Cinderella story, shoe traditions, historic and modern fashion and medical comments from a podiatrist) and am now looking at other ways to write non-fiction articles incorporating and revolving around wedding related traditions and stories. I especially want to add elements of fairy tales and rhymes because of the prevalence of wedding material embedded in folklore. So what I'm asking of this venerable group are insights into your perspectives of this rite of passage. What do you think of things like white for weddings? Or the breaking away from these things -- ie. Gwen Stefanie (I believe it was) wearing a red wedding dress (Chinese good luck isn't it?)? Or what about rings -- for instance other gems possibly topping the diamond from its lofty perch? Greg -- for some reason I'm thinking that our dear bride in Bluebird makes mention of her ring, but I can't recall what the comment is. And then in fairy tale weddings that do occur -- do we see the old traditions coming into play? Brooms, thresholds, honey wine -- whatever.

Comments, threads, suggestions? What would you like to see in a comprehensive article pulling all of these things together? What little hidden tidbits do you wish you had known before you walked down the aisle? Do we have any sacred keepers of traditions and how do they change? Wedding consultants? Mothers? Bridesmaids? Magazines?

Thanks.

Re: Weddings
Hmmm, I wish I could send you every link I have on weddings- I've not only been planning my own wedding, but I've been thinking of making it into a business venture! Here's one article that may be of interest to you:

St. Nicholas as "the patron saint of unmarried women and brides."
http://www.boston.com/globe/magazine/2002/1110/nick.htm

I have books, magazines, and links galore! I've also been looking at alternative to "bridal" media- RPG guides, interior decorating, garden design, painting, you name it! Let me know which paths you'd really like to focus on, and I can post only those that apply, otherwise I'd just have to send you my hard drive and 2 or 3 bins!

Sugarplum dreams,

Kerrie

Hi Kerrie. I'll take any information you are willing to share...

my email address is carrie.miner@cox.net

If you have a list of the best books, I'll go out and purchase them. If it's just hard copied tidbits, I'd be happy to pay for your time, copy fees and postage.

If it's something you want to do for a living, you might want to check out the Association of Bridal Consultants for their certification program.

Thanks for everything.

A few links to start...
I just sent you an email with 2 files- books I'm hoping to buy soon re: weddings and books I have. I also included several websites. I'll post a few here that especially relate to traditions and customs, to generate more talk:

www.medieval-weddings.net/

www.wildernessweddings.com/traditions.html

www.weddings.co.uk/info/tradsupe.htm

www.world-wedding-traditions.net/

As for the ABC, I have looked into them, and many others, but unfortunately most of them want me to give them money, which I don't have too much of at the moment. ;)

Sugarplum dreams,

Kerrie
