Female folklorists...
Dear All:

I'm looking for sources having to do with the lives of female folklorists - would any of you recommend any works in particular?

Best,
Helen

Oops ...
Dear All:

Sorry, forgot to specify which ones, and which period. I'm concentrating on Marian Roalfe Cox and Katherine Briggs in particular, but I'm also interested in learning more about the dedicated corpus of "helpers" (translators, researchers, etc.) who are mentioned in the colored fairy books. Thanks in advance!

Best,
Helen

Women Folklorists
Am I right that you're interested in British folklorists? And mainly those from the Victorian era (Briggs notwithstanding)?

You probably already know Richard Dorson's THE BRITISH FOLKLORISTS, which covers some of the better-known women. The ENZYKLOPAEDIE DES MAERCHENS also has entries on some figures, including short lists of bibliographic references, that might produce some leads, at least for figures like Briggs and Cox.

The topic of the "helpers," the women who collected and shared so much material with editors like Lang and Jacobs, seems to me an important one. I'm not sure how much work's been done on that. I make some references to Jacobs's debt to women in the introduction to my edition of ENGLISH FAIRY TALES AND MORE ENGLISH FAIRY TALES, but I had little luck in trying to track down information about some of the specific women he mentions in his prefaces and annotations. I recall finding some information about specific women folklorists on the web after some searching, but I think in the long run libraries, print sources (e.g., national biographies), and archives would yield more.

Re: Women Folklorists
Dear Don:

Thank you so much! It was actually Dorson who piqued my interest originally, as he doesn't go into too much detail on the figures that I have in mind, aside from their positions within the field. _English Fairy Tales and More English Fairy Tales_ I adore, but I hadn't thought to try the _Enzyklopaedie des Maerchens_. Thanks for your excellent suggestions! It's off to the stacks for me ...

Best,
Helen
