Food of Love
Good morning all. I know there have been postings in the past discussing food and fairytales, but I don't think we dicussed any actual links to love and lust. The examples that come to my mind tend to be mythologically based and usually deal with dear Aphrodite. Kerrie - do you know where the old links are? Can anyone think of aphrodisiacs in fairy tale literature? I remember the artichoke imagery in Angela Carter's rendition of Bluebeard, Persephone's pomegranate and Aphrodite's golden apple. But there has to be more. Anyone?

Thanks.

Well, aside from Eve and the apple of knowledge ...
... what about all of those fairy tales in which a heroine (or, somewhat more rarely, a hero) must cook for her or his beloved in order to gain their attention and eventually their love? In Donkeyskin variants, from Straparola and Basile onwards, this is a standard motif. It's also common in "East of the Sun, West of the Moon" narratives. Will think more about this ...

Hope you're well, and best wishes in the New Year!

Best,
Helen

aphrodisiacs
In the OT mandrakes are idenitified as aphrodisiacs:

Gen. 30:14-16 and Song of Songs 7:13

mandrakes come from a Hebrew word "dudaim" meaning "love apples".

The story of Rachel and Leah in the OT, their love triangle and how they wielded those mandrakes is as riveting a tale as any - quite anti-feminist however - But I highly recommend it for a good read.
