fairy tale helpers
Hello! There are many stories that contain magical beings(fairies, elves, etc) as helpers. One story is Thumbelina, in which a woman wants a child so she goes to an old fairy(or witch in some versions) for help. Characters of this type usually help humans who are in distress. In Toads and Diamonds, a young girl who is mistreated by her mother and sister is told by her mother to fetch water from a well. At the well, the girl meets an old woman( a good fairy in disguise) who asks her for a drink of water. The girl does so, and at this good deed, the fairy tells the girl that every time she speaks a diamond, ruby, or sapphire will fall from her mouth. Another example is in Sleeping Beauty, at the beginning when the queen is bathing in a pond. A frog tells her that she doesn't need to be sad because she will bear a child, which she wants so badly. But only good humans are rewarded, and the bad are punished. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask!

Re: your project
Leah, I was always intrigued by the ineffectual drops of blood in The Goose Girl.

what i am workin on
im working on a new story. i recently did a retelling of the three little men in the wood, and one combining the frog prince and sleeping beauty. Now I am working on an original one. It is about a girl who saves her brothers by completing three tasks. I didn't want to copy another story i read and have her get help from animals, so i had to think of something else. I really like the way it turned out. However all three of them are unchecked. When they are done i will post them if i can. thanks for all ya'lls help!

here is the site i am workin on, it has links to my two completed stories

Leah,
You might want to look at an article in the latest IAFA Journal (most likely to show up in a library) on guide figures. The article focuses specifically on the guide figures in Lord of the Rings, but it would seem applicable to what you're doing, too--as the guides are essentially fairy tale helpers writ large.
