Scott Gustafson
Hello everyone! If anyone is looking for amazing fairy tale artwork, look no further than Scott Gustafson! His paintings are so expressive and colorful, and they have so much personality. He has illustrated Peter Pan, but is otherwise best known for fine art illustration. Some of his paintings include Jack and the Beanstalk, Little Bo Peep, Hansel and Gretel, Old King Cole, Goldilocks and the Three Bears,Humpty Dumpty, Cinderella, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, and The Wizard of Oz. I especially Love Snow White, there is so much detail, and the colors are magnificent. Hallmark just released a book called "Classic Fairy Tales" featuring his work. It's a shorter version of a book that is to be released in the fall of 2003. This new book features the classics Goldilocks and the Three Bears, Little Red Riding Hood, Tom Thumb, Rumplestiltskin, and The Three Little Pigs. The edition that is going to be released in the fall of 2003 will feature other classic fairy tales like Snow White and Sleeping Beauty. I'd advise anyone who is a fan of any of these stories to check out this book! It is outstanding, like all of his work. Just wanted to let everyone know!

I have known Scott G. and his work for close to 20 years, as we both did work for Ariel books in the 80's. He did the marvelous Peter Pan, and I did Heidi, The Secret Garden, and Sleeping Beauty,( which Jane Yolen retold as a special favor "for pennies" as she puts it. There is a recent post where she explains that story. All true, all true. )

Back to Scott Gustafson. He is in my opinion one of the greatest illustrators of our time, especially in the fairytale realm. He has not done many books, as it often takes him a month or two for each painting. While I spend up to a year on a book, I think Peter Pan took him 3 years! He got grabbed a number of years ago by Greenwich Workshop, a high-end limited edition print house, and has been producing paintings for them that they sell as limited edition prints. My personal favorite is a painting of Merlin and Young Arthur.
If you look for the Greenwich Workshop site, there are lots of his pictures there. The images are wonderful, full of detail and light and magic. I have collected many of them myself.

I have always found his work too twee--overly sweet for my taste. If I were to name favorite modern fairy tale illustrators, I would certainly name Ruth and Charles--as well as Brian Froud, Jane Dyer, Nancy Elkholm Burkert, Trina Schart Hyman, Kinuko Craft, the Dillons. They all share a certain bite to their work and a great helping of romanticism.

Brian Froud
Does anybody know if Brian Froud still illustrates books? I think I read somewhere that he has stopped in order to paint fulltime, or something like that.

I totally agree with you. I own The Sleeping Beauty and Snow White books by Trina Schart Hyman and I must say, when I first looked at them, I was in awe. I also agree with you on Nancy Ekholm Burkert, I rented her Snow White book out when I was in elementary school all of the time and finally I purchased my own copy. Love it. I also am a huge admirer of Arthur Racham with his extnsive attention to detail and line work. By the way, are you and Ruth going to be at any book signings in the near future, I really would like it if you could both sign my copy of the Sleeping Beauty. I also own Ruth's edition of Cinderella. I absolutely Love It. :D
