stories on the core self
Hello All,

I'm looking for stories that illustrate the idea that we often live in a state of unconsciousness in regards to the core self. (An excellent example is the story of the mother tiger who dies while giving birth, and the baby tiger is raised by goats, and believes itself to be a goat. As an adult, an older tiger sees this strange sight of a herd of goats with a grown tiger, who even smells like a goat; and so the old tiger tries to show the young tiger his true identity. It's not until the old tiger shoves a piece of a slain goat down the young tiger's throat and he tastes the blood, that a deep roar comes out of the young tiger, and in that moment, he knows his true identity.) Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Scott

Re: stories on the core self
Dear Podnah:

As tremendously obvious as this is, Hans Christian Anderson's "The Ugly Duckling" comes springing immediately to mind. Other stories that might fit ... just about anything with a "The Prince and the Pauper" type of motif, in which a lost heir betrays his or her unconscious nobility would seem to work. Almost all of the tales that occur to me seem to be either animal tales and fables, or more consciously wrought "literary" works ... perhaps the oral tradition holds that human beings (metaphorical counterparts aside) are supposed to be enlightened and beyond the intricacies of identity formation? I'll poke around and see what else I can come up with. Good luck!

Best,
Helen

Thanks Helen - I really appreciate your input, and actually, I had not thought of the Ugly Duckling. Scott

How about the Emperor's New Clothes
I know it doesn't involve animals, but isn't the story about revealing the true self of the Emperor? And the Emperor getting a good look at himself for the first time? Sorry for the puns; I couldn't help myself.

There's an HP Lovecraft story about a Ghoul who believes he is human.
