Best collection of fairy tale illustrations?
Can anyone recommend a great collection of fairy tale
illustrations?

My particular favorite illustrators are Gustav Doré,
Arthur Rackham, and Maxfield Parrish.

Re: Best collection of fairy tale illustrations?
SurLaLune has perhaps the largest gallery on the web of fairy tale illustrations--over 1,000 now. Try here if you haven't seen this yet:

Other than that, there are not many books that collect a multitude of illustrators. Cooper Edens has edited several books which compile various illustrations, but each illustrator tends to be merely represented, not presented in his/her entirety. His books are great books but they are out of print. I recommend www.bookfinder.com or www.bpib.com if you want to hunt for them.

Maria Tatar's Annotated Fairy Tales also has many illustrations, but they are small and do not provide the detail provided in larger reproductions.

Thanks Heidi. That SURE is a great collection of illustrations.

Who has been most admired here on the forum?
Dore, Rackham or Parrish?

Douglas

Re: Best collection of fairy tale illustrations?
I can give you a basic breakdown of the most popular illustrators on SurLaLune based on traffic.

1. Arthur Rackam
2. Kay Nielsen
3. Edmund Dulac
4. Walter Crane
5. Jessie Willcox Smith
6. Gustave Dore
7. Warwick Goble
8. W. H. Robinson
9. Eleanor Vere Boyle
10. John Batten

Batten actually has more hits than anyone but Rackham and Nielsen, but that's because he heads the list of illustrators on the site in alphabetical order. The rest are high from direct hits through search engines. I doubt Batten is even in the top ten. Edward Burne-Jones probably belongs in 10th place. But there are several more within 100 hits of him. The top ten listed above are significantly higher than any of the others listed on the site.
