Nya Nya Bulembu
I am currently searching for a copy of a tale called the "Nya Nya Bulembu." It tells of a young girl wrapped in the skin of a repulsive serpent, then frees herself at the end. It is wonderful. I have locateda copy of it in Danish, but that doesn'thelp too much. I would appreciate any directions you have. THank you.

locating
Do you know where in Africa (I'm assuming Africa?) the stories comes from? It sounds familiar--but it would help to know where it originates. (The name sounds West African?) I have a good collection of annotated anthologies of African tales--which might yield some useful information.

Re: Nya Nya Bulembu
It's probably not the same story, but this reminds me of _Mufaro's Beautiful Daughters: An African Tale,_ by John Steptoe. Except that there are two girls, and though I think there's a snake, I don't believe it's either one of the girls. Sorry for the vagueness. It's been a long time since I read the story.

Steptoe
Steptoe's story is a Cinderella variant...but one he made up and set in Africa. It's an art tale as opposed to a folk tale. (Alan Dundes likes to call these Fake Lore not Folk Lore, but much of the time they go back into the folk culture if they are loved and are successful.)

South African
After thinking about it, I'm fairly certain this is a South African narrative...but I haven't been able to track it down yet. I've looked at Calloway's collection--remembering a tale about a young man who was "hidden" in a snake skin and through his bride is finally freed. But I am not finding the female version you describe. I'll keep looking.
