Re: This one may be a little long, but here goes...
Belle has all the household implements be quiet--as well as her bird in the cage--because Beast will otherwise be unhappy and yell at them. Or hurt the bird. She says stuff like "He doesn't mean to be mean..." etc. And they all tiptoe around. It really is quite ugly.

I'm new to the discussion, but I just want to comment...

I own both the sequels to Beauty and the Beast (as well as the original, of course) and have watched them multiple times. If my memory serves me right, this scene you are talking about doesn't exist. In the episode with the bird in Belle's Magical World, it is the Beast who has the bird, first of all-- he takes the bird from Belle after she takes care of it-- and he wants the bird to sing. When Belle sees that the Beast is keeping the bird prisoner, she yells at him, walks away, and slams the door.

Nowhere, in any of the BatB movies, does Belle act like a battered woman....

"I don't want to get to know him! I don't want to have anything to DO with him!" -BatB

"I don't know why I bother. Now he's worse than ever." -BatB: TEC

"I should have known you'd never be anything but a beast." -BatB: TEC

"That was an awful thing to do! You're acting rude and foolish!" -BatB: BMW

And here is the bird conversation:

Beast: (to bird) Why won't you sing for me?! You're staying in my castle, the least you could do is sing!
Belle: (enters) Why do you yell at the poor thing, as if you own him?
Beast: I command him to sing. Why won't he?
Belle: Because he isn't happy! Do you think you'd sing if you were in a cage?!
Beast: He must obey me!
Belle: Why don't you let him out?
Beast: He'd get away!
Belle: Would you blame him? I would too, if.. (sighs) If only you'd treat him with respect, he'd be happy. If he's happy, he'll sing.
Beast: No! This bird shall sing for my pleasure and mine alone. It is my order!
Belle: (walking away) Your orders, sir, are words, and words alone! They have no meaning to the bird! Or me! (slams door)

Belle was one of the most independent and self-assured Disney heroines. My suggestion to you is to watch the movies again, carefully.

Straight from the horse's mouth:

"It's just that people now don't want fairy stories the way they were written. They were too rough. In the end they'll probably remember the story the way we film it anyway." -- Walt Disney

First Impressions
People nearly always refer back to the first film or book or story that they saw, as the "best". I ask why someone had to film a remake of a certain film, and then I find out that the version I'm in love with, was itself, a re-make!

We have the same in the Law. First Impressions can vary. Six witnesses can give the same story with 6 different twists. That's Humans for you.

Disney's reach
My husband pointed out an article to me this weekend that showed that, after adjusting for inflation, Disney's "Snow White" was the 10th highest income producing movie ever. Several others were in the top 50. The number 2 Disney flick was 101 Dalmations which surprises me because of its poor animation and adaptation - loved the book, hated the movie. Anyway, the point is that Disney is beloved by many. I like Snow White for its time piece aspects - Snow White is such a girl fo the 30's and the art that went into the animation, especially the inking. Anyone ever notice her cheeks are rosie?

But Disney does take huge liberties with stories. What a a delight to learn that neither Snow White, nor Cinderella were really THAT insipid. lol Speaking of insipid though, Rogers and Hammerstein takes the cake for insipid Cinderellas.
