Illustrated Fairy Tale recommendations?
Hi all,
I'd like to get my nieces a nice hardback, illustrated collection of fairy tales for Christmas. Something they'll treasure and go back to again and again as they get older. When I was a girl I had the Maurice Sendak-illustrated Juniper Tree two volume set and I read them to pieces.
I'm sure you all have your favorites too. I'd love to hear your suggestions as I go about my xmas shopping.

For children's fairy tale anthologies here are some recommendationed books currently in print:
1) One of the most popular illustrators of a children's anthology with the board regulars is Adrienne Segur. Two of her books are back in print, which are linked here:

3) For classic illustrations, albeit not the best reproductions available, another anthology that proved popular with older kids last year was Maria Tatar's The Annotated Classic Fairy Tales:

Illustrations all aound...
I'll pipe in with another hearty reccomendation for the Scott Gustafson illustrated CLASSIC FAIRY TALES. It's obviously a labor of love (I 've never been too keen on Michael Hague work as his people are down right ugly and the pictorial space is way to flat, for me anyway...).
I believe that there is a collection of Anderson's fairy tales illustrated by the sublime Lizbeth Zwerger in print.

Also, SLEEPING BEAUTY & OTHER FAVORITE FAIRY TALES retold by Angela Carter (for children this time...) with tons of Michael Foreman pictures.

And a superb edition of ALICE'S ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND filled to the brim with excellent Rackham/Celtic inspired paintings by Angel Dominguez.

THE GREAT SWEDISH FAIRY TALES with magnificant illustrations by John Bauer is most probably out of print but is easily found and usually not very pricey. One of my favorites.

Excellent Illustrated Fairy Tale Collections
I have to highly recommend Scott Gustafson's "Classic Fairy
Tales", especially since he is my favorite illustrator. Another
collection I find to be noteworthy is "Children's Classics"
by Charles Santore. This book includes Aesop's Fables, Snow White,
and The Wizard of Oz (all of which are stunningly illustrated).
Any lover of art would definetely be captivated by Santore's work.
One last book I would recommend is "The Candlewick Book of
Fairy Tales" illustrated by P. J. Lynch. Many appealing illustrations
in this one. There are many, many more I could mention, but those
would be top picks.
