Looking for book published in the 1960's (I think)
I do not know the title or publisher...

The book is a collection of fairy tails
that include at least 10 tales:

The White Dear
a tale about a sea turtle
a tale about an imprisoned princess who was
visited by a bird... wicked (step mother)
placed daggers outside the window that pierced the bird
The twelve dancing princesses
a tale about a wife who looked into her husband's (prince)
forbidden chest, found a frog skin and threw it away...
and others
Seven brothers
Seven Swans

I remember the book as hard back, about 11 x 8 1/2

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Re: Looking for book published in the 1960's (I think)

You're looking for a book called The Golden Book of Fairy Tales, with translations (from the original French edition) by Marie Ponsot and illustrations by the divine Adrienne Segur. The book is now back in print again, in a new edition that is easily available and looks very much like the old one.

There's an article on Adrienne Segur on the Endicott Studio site:

www.endicott-studio.com/jMA03Summer/segur.html

including some examples of her art. More information on the translator, poet Marie Ponsot, can be found at:

www.poets.org/poets/poets.cfm?prmID=100

There are many Segur fans on this board, and you'll find previous discussions of her work in the board's archives.

Speaking of Segur, I recently came across a treasure trove of *eight* books illustrated by her, published in France in the 1950s, in a little bookshop in the medieval back streets of Lyon. (Actually, to give credit where credit is due, it was Ellen Kushner who first found them and then brought me back to the shop with her, promising "a surprise".) I promptly beggared myself to buy them all, of course. When time permits, I'll scan some illustrations from them and add them to the article on the Endicott site. These eight volumes include all the illustrations/stories we're familiar with from the two American volumes of her work, but many, many that we're not. What a find!

The bookshop specialized in children's books and the owner seemed quite knowledgeable about the field -- but she said that Segur isn't particularly well known in France today, and she was surprised to hear that the artist has developed such a cult following in the U.S. The only information she could add to the mystery of Segur's life is that an early work of hers was published under the name Adrienne Novel (perhaps "Segur" was a married name? or another family name adopted later in life? or was Novel even her true name to begin with?), and that she'd heard somewhere that Segur was agoraphobic and never left her house...although, since she couldn't recall where she'd heard it, she wasn't sure how reliable this information was. She also didn't believe there was a direct relationship between Adrienne Segur and the famous fairy tale writer the Comtesse de Segur, which is something I'd heard from other sources. Adrienne Segur was born in 1901 and started publishing in the 30s; it is extremely unlikely that she is still alive today. She'd be very old indeed.

Re: Looking for book published in the 1960's - Thank You!
Terri,

WOW! What a delight! I was so excited with this find that I already have the "Golden Book of Fairy Tales" and the "Snow Queen and Other Tales" on their way. I am a grandmother of a 3-year old granddaughter, and I am looking forward to sharing this with her. Of course, it will be after I've reread them front-to-back at least once.

In addition, this site is a find also! It will take me awhile to review the postings.

Thank you, again for your prompt response!

Terri,

What wonderful news about the books and new information about Segur, however speculative it might be. Thanks for sharing! It is truly amazing how often Segur's books are requested...

Heidi
