Trees
As part "native american", I have the full feelings for
nature. I've tried, in the past, to explain the deep,
emotions that cause one to say that a tree or an
animal can be a "brother". Not a brother in the aspect
of physical (or even deep religion), but in the aspect of
sharing the earth.

When I eat wild berries, I see the plant, the roots,
the earth; all that it takes to produce the berries, and
then I realize that, at some point, I too should feed
the berry bush, with my body. This kindredness comes
from the interaction of natural causes upon the bodies
of both the thinking and unthinking "spirits"; that part of
each of us that exists while living, be it a human or
plant.

Point is then that, I hold an old tree in deep respect.
When someone wants to cut down a 100 year old tree
and tell me that they are planting 5 in its place, I ask
them how long will it be before we see another 100 yr
old tree? "One hundred years!" they say. "Wrong..."
I respond. Will you be around in 100 years, to see
the results of your re-planting?

And when we destroy a one-of-a-kind item, it is then,
lost forever. You may see photos, prints, copies of
the Mona Lisa. But if I burn it, all your substitutes
will not be the original!

{ok, putting soap box back under porch now...)

Another take
There is a wonderful story about pagodas in "The Green Man" anthology edited by Terri Windling and Ellen Datlow. Pagodas, it turns out, are fairy dwellings (forts?) in the woods of France.

Re: Another take
Actually, Jess, pagodas are a kind of faery creature. In French folklore, they're made of porcelain or else at least look like porcelain, and have the shape of tiny oriental pagodas, hence the name.

Oops
Yes, you are right, of course, Terri. I loved the imagery in that story so that I somehow in my mind melded the creatures with the forts they were building. Thanks for setting the record straight.
