kindegarten fairytale corner
I am a room-mom at my daughters school and I'm in charge of decorating a corner of the room in a fairytale theme. I was hoping someone would have some ideas for me? also, any ideas on materials used? thanks in advance for your help.

My Own Little Corner
O.K., this is the theatre maven in me, but Rodgers and Hammerstein have the perfect song for your project in CINDERELLA. The heroine sings: "In my own little corner, in my own little chair, I can be whatever I want to be . . . "

Get a refrigerator (or other large appliance) box and cut it in half so that you have a corner (i.e. two sides and a triangle of "floor"--you can cut away the sides to look fireplace/chimney-like). This way, you could paint at will and will make for easy installation (though it might make transportation a little tricky if you don't have a large vehicle). Use large, rectangular kitchen sponges (cut into the appropriate width if need be) and poster paint to make bricks (paint the back ground the color you want for "mortar"--or just leave it brown; print "bricks" with the sponge, leaving 1/2" or 1" between bricks. You get a better effect if you double print the bricks in two different colors--say a dark red over an orange or brown over gray--try a few options out and see what you like. Make an arched opening for a fireplace (you could staple or glue in red/orange tissue paper flames, add a small log or two--or find an old electric fireplace log, if it's deemed safe enough)

The final touch would be a small stool or chair (per the song)--and if you wanted to add a pumpkin and a small cage of plastic or rubber mice, you've got all the makings for Cinderella's hearthside.

Re: My Own Little Corner
What a perfectly adorable idea. I'm really impressed. I can see kids taking turns (on their birthdays? When they do a really good job on something?) and sitting in the fantasy set to make wishes or tell stories.
