Cinderella Names?
Hi, I've just started on a sort of re-telling of Cinderella but I'm stuck for names. In the version I have one of the step-sisters is called Javotte but there are no other names mentioned. Does anyone know of any used in other versions, particularly for the step-sisters and Cinderella's real name. Or could someone point me in the direction of suitable sounding names if there are no official ones. (I could use this anyway as there are a couple of new characters in my story)
Thanks - Gem

Re: Cinderella Names?
Hi. There are various names mentioned for the step-sisters; they vary from version to version. I've heard the step-sisters be named Claudette and Javotte, Marguerite and Jacqueline (Ever After), Anastacia and Druscilla (Disney's "Cinderella"), Calliope and Minerva (the 1997 Rodgers and Hammerstein's "Cinderella"), Prunella and Esmerelda (the 1964 Rodgers and Hammerstein's "Cinderella"), etc. In one version (though I can't remember which one) Cinderella's real name is Ella. The step-sisters added the Cinder- part. What about Esther and Ermine for step-sister names?

Re: Cinderella Names?
In addition to Ella, Cinderella's name has appeared as Ellen, and in "Ever After," her name was Danielle. I've even seen versions where she's called Cindy.

When I name characters, I try to make the names evocative of the time and place of the story, as well as indicating something about the characters themselves. Where is your story set? Contemporary suburbia? The wicked stepsisters will have very different names than those in medieval Scandanavia--say, Ashley and Tiffany vs Hallgerd and Gutbjorg. One great source for names is census records or town records (easily found online) from the time and place you're interested in. Baby name books/sites are also good--don't just look at the entry names themselves; often the variants are even more interesting.

Re: Cinderella Names?
Thanks for the suggestions. It's set in 'fairytaleland' as it were so I guess I'm looking at slighly unusual names. I found a great baby name site the other day but haven't really had time to go through it properly. The census records sound a good idea too, I'll see what I can find. Anyway thanks guys,
Gem

Re: Cinderella Names?
In the ballet, the sisters are called Krivlyaka and Zlyuka, if that helps.

Rossini's Cinderella
Rossini composed an opera of Cinderella. I have a great recording somewhere of it - Bartolli in the lead - but I can't seem to find it right now. I don't remember the sisters' names, but if I find it, I'll let you know.

Re: Rossini's Cinderella
In "Cat Cinderella," Cinderella is called Zezolla, and there are six stepsisters -- Imperia, Calamita, Fiorella, Diamante, Colombina, and Pascarella. The stepmother is named Carmosina.

In "Katie Woodencloak," Cinderella is named Katie.

In other versions, Cinderella is named Mara or Maria. "The Fairy Godmother" by Mercedes Lackey has Cinderella named Elena and the stepsisters are Daphne and Delerium.

Tootles~~If I can't be anything important, would you like to see me do a trick?

Re: Faerie Tale Theatre
Yikes, I was about to type the name of the stepsisters in the Faerie Tale Theatre version of Cinderella (Jennifer Beals, Matthew Broderick) then realized that I can't remember if they even had names to begin with. *thwap self*

Anyone have any idea?

In the musical movie of Cinderella called 'The Slipper and the Rose' she was called Cinderella, and the step sisters were Isabella and Paladine.
Great movie by they way!
