Unit Plan Help!
I am piecing together some ideas to teach Fairy Tales to a Senior English class this semester. I did a little bit of this last year, but want to expand on it this year.
I want my kids to really understand symbolism and critical analysis of all types of literature, and I think Fairy Tales will be a good way to begin. I am even thinking about analyzing some of these stories from a Freudian point of view. Can you suggest some stories or activities that you might have tried that worked well for you? Any ideas, thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Is this for high school? Is it for gifted students? Not that either
of those things really matter... You may want to consider using
a combination of traditional tales with modern retellings. I find
that people respond well to more current idiom and it becomes easier
for them to see the symbols if they are comfortable with the language.
For example, Charles De Lint wrote a lovely version of The Little
Mermaid called Our
Lady of the Harbor. His story might be more accessible to your
students than Andersen's tale. You could also try having your class
write their own fairy tales. Discuss common themes and ideas and
let them test their pens. The use of repetition might be a good
place to start. Three sons, three tasks etc. Or if you want to focus
on analysis of symbol, you could send them on a literary scavenger
hunt for certain things. Like innocence or deception or fear or
success. Sounds neat- I sure would have liked to study fairy tales
when I was in school.
