double-yolked egg
Just wondering if anyone knows the significance in folklore of eating/finding a double-yolked egg. (Not really related to anything except my breakfast. But I'm curious.)

Grandma sucks eggs...
Finding a double yolked egg is lucky... (because you get two yolks!)

In traditional English folklore finding an egg with no yolk is no joke beacuse it's supposedly unlucky... (especially for the hen because it's a sign that she's a bit elderly for laying and will probably be eaten soon!) ...and some people supposedly believed that no-yolkers were laid by cockerels (and that if cockerel eggs are allowed to hatch they produce monsters like the cockatrice... eek!).

Divination by egg was a common practice.

And witches supposedly sail in eggshells... which is why I never smash mine if I can help it... after all, everyone should have a hobby, even witches... and I look forward to a team of witches winning the Americas Cup in an eggshell!

Double yolks
My mother always used to say that finding a double yolk was lucky. Recently, my husband I bought a dozen eggs and ALL of them had double yolks!

But, back to my childhood ... we had some hens and a rooster and we found that the double yolks seemed to come from extraordinarily healthy and happy hens who ranked high in the pecking order, that is, they were favoured by the rooster and seemed to get all the best food. These hens generally produced brown, smooth shelled eggs that were almost spherical in shape. The hens that were lowest in the pecking order and were bossed around by the other hens, tended to produce long, pale, bumpy, weak shelled eggs with pale yolks.

So, as far as my husband and I having the good fortune to get a dozen double yolkers, well, I don't know why that happened. Perhaps the hens were a very happy bunch, or maybe they were eating special food.

My mother also used to say that if you ate double bananas (conjoined, and within the same skin), then you would have twins. Didn't work for me though. :lol

Re: Double yolks
If all your double yolked eggs hatched into two-headed chickens Celestial it might be an omen that you lived too close to a nuclear power station... or may be not! :)

I tried the egg divination thingy. You drop egg white into water and the shape supposedly tells you what job your next lover will do for a living... and either I'm not very good at reading eggs or my next lover is going to be Caspar the friendly ghost...
