help Identifying a Particular Fairy tale
It's been over 30 years since I read this story...it went something like this, there was a woodsman cutting wood in the forest when the devil popped up and made a bet with him - I don't remember the bet, but the prize was a pair of shoes made from the loser's hide. Long story short, the woodsman won and took great joy in peeling the hide from the devil's back to make the shoes...and they were the best shoes he ever owned. Anyone remember what the name of this story was and where I can get a copy of it/buy the book (I seem to remember that this was one story of many compiled into one book). Thanks!

Re: help Identifying a Particular Fairy tale
Boy, this sounds familiar and I'm thinking it's in an Irish collection but can't be sure. I'll snoop a bit and see what I come up with.

Re: devuil shoes
For Andrew Lang's collections try this website:

etext.lib.virginia.edu/to...nBlue.html

Replace "Blue" above for the other colors or go to the home page.

Actually, this one is my favorite for searching Lang's books.

Invaluable, really.

Re: Andrew Lang
Wow! What a great index!

I have been using the Virginia source for a couple of years now, but it isn't easy to seach. The text itself on the Virginia source is easy for my weak eyes to read and seems to have few typos/textual errors.

"The Devil's Hide"
You'll find a version of this Finnish folktale, "The Devil's Hide," in Jane Yolen's anthology of Favorite Folktales from Around the World. I have also heard it told on a cd from a storyteller. If you're interested in finding an audio version, I'll look for it.
