Big Fish (movie)
The current Albert Finney movie is getting good reviews. I would be interested to know what those in the fairy tale studies and folklore community think about it. In particular:

1. Are there any additional stories or sources (of quality) that examine healing within the father/son relationship?

2. Any comments on the role water plays in the story? (For instance, Finney's character is found in the bathtub and he states he fears he is drying out. His wife replies with something to the effect of that she fears she will never get dry.)

Thanks!

Healing in the Father/Son relationship
1. Are there any additional stories or sources (of quality) that examine healing within the father/son relationship?

"Field of Dreams" comes to mind. Like "Big Fish," it involves an estranged father and son that once connected through lore (tall tales and jokes compared with baseball stories and statistics). In both cases, the son has to explore the lore to "find" who his father was. In both cases, the son uses the lore to find a space for reconciliation. The son in "Big Fish" creates a tale for his father, just as Ray builds the field in "Field of Dreams."

I don't have any thoughts on the water aside from the obvious-- the symbol of the unconscious (Jungian sense) and passage to another world.
