Little Red Riding Hood Subverted
I am currently studying English at newcastle university and in the process of writing an essay on the subversion of fairy tales, most notably 'Little
Red Riding hood'.

I was wondering if you could advise me on any other subverted versions other than that of Angela Carter, or if there are any other tales which have been used as the site of subversion. Any information would be of
great help.

Re: Little Red Riding Hood Subverted
Dear SJP:

I'm sure that you've come across Jack Zipes' study of LRRH (_The Trials and Tribulations of Little Red Riding Hood_, Routledge, 1993), which is by far the most useful collection of the tale-type that I've seen; he includes some beautifully subversive versions, my personal favorites being by Tanith Lee and Anne Sharpe. Aside from the tale from Lee included in that anthology ("Wolfland") she also has a take on LRRH included in Ellen Datlow and Terri Windling's anthology _Sirens: Magical Tales of Love and Seduction_ (EOS, 1998) which turns the idea of "prey" completely on its head. From the same editors, _Snow White, Blood Red_ (EOS, 1993) contains a great version by Wendy Wheeler, entitled "Little Red": this version looks at the potential truths embedded in the tale, and would make for a great contrasting piece with the former; also contains Kathy Koja's "I Shall Do Thee Mischief in the Wood" (conversely, good for a comparison with Lee's, though told from a much more threatening perspective.) Also consider Nalo Hopkinson's "Riding the Red" (_Black Swan, White Raven_, Avon Books, 1997). These are just the ones that pop to mind immediately ... hope this helps!

Best,
Helen

Re: Little Red Riding Hood Subverted
In addition to Helen's recommendations, "Little Red Riding Hood Uncloaked: Sex, Morality, and the Evolution of a Fairy Tale" by Catherine Orenstein is a good read -- though Orenstein missed or ignored a number of excellent modern re-tellings of the tale, such as Nalo Hopkinson's.

Grimm and Perrault subverted it....
Earlier versions had the girl catching on and outwitting the wolf! In a very non-Victorian manner.

I think the links are at the bottom of my web page,

My favorite is James Thurber's take which ends with Red taking out a pistol and shooting the wolf because "Little girls aren't so easy to fool nowadays..." or words to that effect.

The small girl smiles. One eyelid flickers.
She whips a pistol from her knickers.
She aims it at the creature's head,
And bang bang bang, she shoots him dead.

Vive le Dahl!

God!
I'd totally forgotten about that great Thurber take! I could swear I once saw it animated. Maybe on "My World and Welcome To It?"

Miss Riding Hood
What I like most about Roald Dahl's version is that Little Red does not kill the wolf because he ate her Grandmother.

She does not even kill him in self defense.

She kills him because she wants his fur coat!

She is a REAL Predator, like the wolf.

But the poor wolf is way out of his league...
