Re: New Hans Christian Andersen translation...
Congrats, Terri. I told Sharyn, and I believe this, that now that a children's book has won the collection and a children's book author (Lloyd Alexander) has won the Master catagory, the Powers That Be at World Fantasy will create a children's/YA strand.

Much like the NYTimes suddenly adding a children's bestseller list when Harry potter co-opted the top three slots of the regular list.

Congrats again.

Green Man ...
Congratulations a thousand times on the WF award - the caliber of the works which shared the category is spectacular, and the award well deserved.

Best,

Hooray!
Add my congratulations to the pile. I treasure my copy both for the marvelous stories and for the memories of meeting so many of the contributors. It couldn't happen to a nicer book. ;-)

fairy tale art
There's a stunning new web site full of fairy tale and mythic art that I want to recommend to folks here:
www.virginialee.net.

Virginia is the daughter of the artists Alan Lee and Marja Lee Kruijt. She's extraordinarily talented, and has a very unique vision. She truly ought to be illustrating children's books.

Congratulations
I just read Gregory Maguire's contribution to the anthology yesterday. I have been savoring the stories. They are indeed enjoyable. Congratulations to the contributors too!

Sleeping with Bears
The November 11 issue of Strange Horizons (www.strangehorizons.com) has a terrific story by one of my favorite new writers, Theodora Goss, which draws on the various 'Woman Who Married a Bear' fairy tales and legends.

The Lost Girls by Laurie Fox
I just heard about this book that deals with five generations of the Darling family and the legacy of the Wendys. It sounds interesting. I know there are some Peter Pan fans on the board and was wondering if anyone had heard anything about it.

Re: The Lost Girls by Laurie Fox
Yes, I'd also like to know if anyone has read The Lost Girls yet. It sounds intriguing, but reviews have been pretty mixed.

Two books I've read recently and highly recommend are:
On Becoming a Fairy Godmother, stories by Sara Maitland (it's a UK publication; you can get it through Amazon.co.uk), and
The Truth About Celia by Kevin Brockmeier, which makes use of The Green Children legend. These are both terrific writers.

WENDY by Karen Wallace
There's also a new YA out from Simon and Schuster called WENDY by Karen Wallace. I saw it at the bookstore the other day and then checked it out on Amazon. It's the story of Wendy Darling right before she meets Peter Pan, and looks very interesting. Has anyone read it yet?

I'm elated to hear about you illustrating Peter Pan - I'll look forward to that! I can't imagine anyone more suited for this. The recent film and the upcomming J.M. Barrie movie with Johnny Depp and Kate Winslet should propel sales.

Inside Grandad by Peter Dickinson
Hello,

I thought I would mention that Peter Dickinson has a new novel out called Inside Grandad which has some selkie elements to it. I haven't read it yet, but apparently it's more realism than fantasy. Nevertheless, I thought board members might want to know.

In the least self-promoting way possible ...
... and in the interests of those who might want to read about either Russian fairy tales or the Goblin Market, I just thought that I'd mention two things: First, that the latest edition of Realms of Fantasy contains my article on Baba Yaga and her role in modern fiction (which will also be up on the Endicott site, along with a separate piece presenting an overview of Russian fairy tales), and, second, that the next issue of Extrapolations will contain my essay concerning the commodification of the Goblin Market, a topic that you all were kind enough to let me ramble about some time ago. I think that I literally owe it all to SurLaLune ... thanks, guys!

THE L0ST GiRLS
I read the book and it's worth every bit of you're time. It's funny, interesting, and cute. If you love Peter Pan and ever wondered what happened to Wendy and her "Darlings" this book will answer that for sure.

Does anybody know where i can find reviews on this book?

Amazon.com usually posts reviews of books from established review sources. Reviews from Booklist and Publisher's Weekly are listed for this book at the above link.

Good luck with your project!

Swan Sister anthology
Swan Sister: Fairy Tales Retold (published by Simon & Schuster) has just been selected for inclusion on the New York Library's 2004 Books for the Teen Age List. Congratulations to everyone on this board who had stories in the book: Jane Yolen, Midori Snyder, Greg Frost. (Also to Heidi, since the book was dedicated to her!)
