Good point. To clarify, I was trying to point to Disney's version of Barrie's portrayal of "Indians" in Peter Pan, which really does seem to generalize (make no distinction between tribes) and stereotype both. The other instance where I used "Native American Groups" to refer to the protests that've been going on here on campus was my own generalization, but in my laziness, I didn't look up the individual groups taking part in the ongoing (sigh) debate.

Off the main-topic, as to pirates and eye-liner: I remember reading (maybe in "Under the Black Flag" by David Cordingly) that pirates would wear kohl around their eyes to combat the glare kicking up from the waves.
