caribbean goddesses(and gods)
Here's a goddess question I hope some of you lovely people can help me with. I've recently "come across" a goddess known as Atabey. She was worshipped in the Antilles(Caribbean) way back when, I'm not sure, as a sort of nature goddess, I believe. There's hardly anything on the Web about her. Can anyone point me in the right direction-books, websites-other early Antillean deities too? I'm NOT enquiring about Afro-Caribbean deities such as are found in the Santeria, Vodun, Candomble traditions-they fascinate me too, but there's much more stuff available.
In advance for any help, thank you.

Re: caribbean goddesses(and gods)
Did she pre-date slavery? i.e. was she Taino?

Re: caribbean goddesses,etc.
You're welcome. You're right; there doesn't seem to be much on the web about Taino beliefs. Found one discussion forum (I'm still prickly with irritation at one poster's insistence that the Taino gods were "idols,") where someone cites a book that might be helpful:

Art and Mythology of the Taino Indians by Eugenio Fernandez Mendez
First edition was in 1972, printed in Mexico, S.A., Coyoacan 1035, Mexico 12, D.F.

Here's the thread on Taino beliefs: www.occultforums.com/view...p?p=190895

caribbean deities, etc
Thank you for that book title, Nalo.I'll keep my eyes peeled. Something else I'm going to order is "Carib Folk Tales and Fantasies", edited by M. Andrews and to be published by Macmillan Caribbean in the next few weeks-end of June, I believe. It may not make overt references to the deities but I hope it will give me a deeper sense of this culture.
I feel embarrassed asking this-the ignorant white person, etc-but here goes : are there people still alive who describe themselves as Carib ? Is this an ethnic minority in places in the Caribbean, Costa Rica, etc ? I was rather surprised to hear of a collection of Carib Folktales coming out at all, as I was under the impression that Caribs died out, i.e. were murdered, caught European diseases, etc., several centuries ago.
In advance, for any help and enlightenment, many thanks.

I don't know as much as I could about this either. I do know that I have Taino (i.e. Carib and Arawak) blood, as do many people from the Caribbean. Taino cultures are by no means extinct, though I gather that there are few people remaining with full Taino blood. There is a Carib reserve in Dominica where there are Carib people living. I have a wooden carved from that came from there. Information here: www.wildsidedestinations.com/carib.html

There's some more here: www.centrelink.org/Dominica.html

I believe that the notion that Caribs were cannibals is increasingly discredited.
